Enrolment in the electoral register

As a citizen of one of the European Union (EU) countries and living in Denmark you can vote in Denmark at the European Parliament Elections.

The latest European Parliament Election in Denmark was held on 26 May 2019 and the next election will be held in 2024.

As an EU citizen with a permanent address in Denmark, you can vote in the European Parliament Elections in Denmark if you have reached the age of 18 years on election day. If you want to vote in the European Parliament Elections in Denmark, you must fill out the application form and send it to your local municipality, i.e. the “kommune” where you live. You can find the application form in Danish, English, French, German, and Polish on the links below.

For further information please see the notification letters on the links below, which are in the same five languages. The letters were drafted before the latest European Parliament Elections in Denmark on 26 May 2019, and therefore the letters contain deadlines in relation to this election. However, the content (except deadlines) in the letters still applies, which is why reference is made to the letters.

Resident EU-diplomats etc. can vote for European Parliament elections in Denmark

Resident EU citizens who legally reside in Denmark without being registered as resident or an EU diplomat can vote for European Parliament elections in Denmark

EU citizens with a permanent address in Denmark and who by or before election day have reached 18 years of age are entitled to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Denmark. If you are legally residing in Denmark, but you are not yet registered as a resident in the Civil Registration System (CPR), you can still be considered to have a permanent address in Denmark. This may be the case if you are waiting to receive an EU registration certificate from the Agency for International Recruitment and Integration.

In order for you to exercise your voting right, you must be enrolled in the electoral register. If you are an EU citizen and reside in Denmark, you can only be enrolled in the electoral register for the election in Denmark upon application. The reason is that EU citizens who live in a member state other than their home country can choose if they want to participate in the elections in their home country or their country of residence. However, you can only vote in one place, and thus you cannot vote both in the elections in Denmark and in your home country.

If you want to vote in the elections in Denmark, you must fill out the application form (see the application form below) and enclose documentation for the information stated on the application form. You can apply for enrolment in the electoral register no earlier than 8 weeks before election day.

The application form must be sent to your residence municipality.

You can read more about which documentation you must enclose, etc., in the guide to the application form.
