Binding municipal referendums

A majority in a municipal council may decide to hold a binding referendum on a matter in the municipality.

Who Can Vote?

The conditions for voting in local and regional elections and municipal binding referendums are the same. If you can vote in the local and regional elections, you can also vote at a binding municipal referendum in the municipal, where you live.

Resident EU-diplomats etc. can vote in binding municipal referendums upon application

In order for you to exercise your voting right, you must be enrolled in the electoral register upon application. If you want to vote in a binding municipal referendum, you must fill out an application form approved by The Ministry of the Interior and Health.

The application form must be sent to the municipality where you have your private address.

You cannot apply for enrolment in the electoral register before the municipal council has decided that a binding municipal referendum should be held. However, you can apply at the earliest 3 months before the Election Day. You must send in the application at the latest 4 weeks before Election Day. If this day is a Saturday, Sunday or other public holiday, the deadline is instead the preceding weekday. For some applicants the deadline is 15 days before Election Day at 12 o’clock. If this day is a Saturday, Sunday or other public holiday, the deadline is instead the preceding weekday.

Resident EU citizens who legally reside in Denmark without being registered as a resident or an EU diplomat can vote in binding municipal referendums upon application

EU citizens with a permanent address in Denmark and who by or before Election Day have reached 18 years of age are entitled to vote in binding municipal referendums. If you are legally residing in Denmark, but you are not yet registered as a resident in the Civil Registration System (CPR), you can still be considered to have a permanent address in Denmark. This may be the case if you are waiting to receive an EU registration certificate from the Agency for International Recruitment and Integration.

If you want to vote in the elections in Denmark, you must fill out the application form (see the application form below) and enclose documentation for the information stated on the application form.

The application form must be sent to your residence municipality.
